Upon arriving home from Dr. Carlos Warter’s retreat I opened my mail. One of the envelopes contained a personally designed card from a friend with a poem. Her thoughtful and moving verse suggested that the last millennium had gone awry. Most of us share a longing for love and this collective longing, she stated, had become displaced into greed, disparity, and war. She suggested that our children need to perceive love unconditionally so that the next millennium may be different from the last. How do we go about giving our children unconditional love?
Dr. Carlos Warter, MD Ph.D. has spent 30 years as a psychiatrist, transpersonal psychotherapist, seeker of truth, teacher, and healer. He has mentioned on many occasions: “What if babies everywhere for the next thousand years were told, as they were growing, that they were a divine creation of God manifested here to be loved? What if they were called to carry forward the stewardship of the planet with the understanding that they were instruments of God’s creation and conduits of love?” Then, in Dr. Warter’s words, “negative love conditioning” would be gone, instead life would be honored and held sacred.
What Dr. Warter taught me was to look at my life as a small story in the context of a bigger story. The big story refers to the world or the universe or God. It is the level that many call the unconditional. We represent then small versions of the big story.
At birth our connection to this source of love is wide open. But from the moment of our birth the relationship to it becomes obscured. If our needs go unmet, we learn to act or behave so that they will get met. At this point, usually early in our lives our perception of God changes.
We are removed from the experience of this natural perception of essence. There is a rupture of our connection to our divinity, leading to separation anxiety. If it is not quelled by our caregivers, it imprints in us fear and longing. This leads to a search for love. We begin to compensate by our actions trying to correct the perceived deficiency. Our caregivers have had to go through the same process and have also lost their connection to their essence. As a result, they show us the way to get love in the world, is by finding it outside us. We must perform some act or some deed that will get us the love we need. This is the negative love conditioning that Dr. Warter refers to in his teachings.
We begin to make up for this deficiency by doing whatever it takes to get love. From this point forward our relationships become conditional. As a person, family and society we become enmeshed in trying to get something from each other. This drive permeates our lives. It dictates our personal and business relationships. It generates the burden of stress that we deal with as individuals and groups. It has now been shown that stress effects how our bodies function and how they heal. Additionally, we often pick unhealthy ways of dissipating stress such as smoking, overeating, or drinking. Thus the loss of our connection to the divine has significant consequences for our health and well being.
If we want to stop this endless process of trying to fill up where we are deficient, we need to stop searching outside ourselves and reconnect to that place of divinity inside us. When I was in Sunday school we used to sing “This little light of mine, Iím going to let it shine” and that is what we need to do. By finding our light we can feel the divine in our lives. But this doesn’t happen because of an accomplishment, it is a shift to our essence. This shift starts by living in the present.
In the present, our past, which led to our conditioning, and our future, which creates our expectations, can’t be there affecting us. It is here that we can experience the unconditional, the space of no effort and no resistance. This experience is important because we can begin the process of change as a result. By reconnecting to our essence we project unconditional love into the world. This sounds pretty straightforward and simple. But our conditioning is strong and resists change. The call to us is to change the world. We do this when we change ourselves.
Transforming ourselves by being fully present in the present changes the world. In embracing our essence we are aligned with God or unconditional love so that more love is brought into the present through us. We also become less stressed; we have stopped trying to do something to be loved. Our health improves and the quality of our lives is enriched. Many people have come to this change through powerful life experiences oftentimes described as mystical or religious. Others seek teachers who can show them the door to their soul. Dr. Carlos Warter is a teacher.
Dr. Warter has refined and crafted an approach to personal change that works to connect us to our essence. By using his experience with multiple disciplines including science, religion, and psychology he helps the student develop their own spirituality which keeps them connected to their essence and its source. His Personal Integration Process allows people to shift from their negative love conditioning to being free from it. Dr. Warter’s techniques are designed to facilitate the individual to use their own life experiences to release themselves from the tyranny of their past and transform these experiences into powerful tools for realizing unconditional love. They then project it into the world. This power of love is the most potent healing agent on earth. Aside from his family, Dr. Warter’s knowledge of unconditional love and his ability to help us find, use, and project our own truly represents his greatest work. He models a shifting mechanism for the new millennium.
Dr. Warter says, “The Personal Integration Process allows us an entry point not only in the battle against evil, but also in the prevention of family, and moral decay. We need to approach this new millennium more holistically, with more openness and farsightedness. If we are going to make this right kind of effort to make the future of the world better. Even while engaged in material progress and taking care of people’s well being, we need to pay equal attention developing peace of mind by taking care of our internal aspect of being. Our formal education generally deals with only academic accomplishments, we need to develop more altruism and a sense of caring and responsibility for others in our hearts and minds and educational institutions. This can be done involving values, spirituality and diverse expressions of the divine, but not necessarily involving religion, thus respecting all points of worship. Therefore, all secular education, as in fact consists of basic human qualities such as kindness, compassion, sincerity, and honesty.”
Dr. Warter has developed an international community over his career. It is his life’s work through his teachings, books, and presentations. He has been dedicated to the establishment of a global community that integrates and lives these values and he promotes the Personal Integration Process to do this. Dr. Warter is president of the World Health Foundation and the Heartnet Community, which is linked globally through e-mail. He is the author of over 20 books on this topic. Many are grateful to him for his contribution for the healing in their life and there are many that have benefited indirectly.

More Reasons or Excuses to Eat Chocolate

This is just as well, as chocolate is highly seductive. Even the smell of it slows brain waves, inducing a sense of calmness. In trials conducted by Dr Neil Martin, principal lecturer in neuropsychology at Middlesex University, chocolate was rated not only for a pleasant odor, but also for being relaxing.
"The smell alone can even enhance verbal learning," says Martin.
It is thought that chocolate causes the brain to release endorphins, the natural opiates that are our pleasure chemicals, and a compound in chocolate, phenylethylamine (PEA), is supposed to stimulate the same reaction in the body as falling in love.
If you felt inclined to eat 25 pounds of chocolate at one sitting, you might feel the effects of the chemicals in chocolate which are similar to those produced by marijuana.
We have long known that chocolate has nutritional value as it contains a reasonable quantity of magnesium and iron, 50 milligrams and 1.2 milligrams respectively in 1.75 ounces of plain chocolate. The same amount of milk chocolate has 110 milligrams of calcium; a daily bar provides between a tenth and a fifth of the recommended nutrient intake for these minerals.
But chocolate is a complex food and researchers are regularly uncovering new compounds in it. A study from University of California, published in The Lancet, found that 1.5 ounces of chocolate, or a cup of cocoa made with 2 tablespoons of powder, had about the same amount of antioxidant phenolic compounds as a glass of red wine.
The flavonoids contained in chocolate seem to reduce the time it takes for blood to clot, which might lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
A Harvard University study of 8,000 men over 65 found that, on average, those who ate chocolate lived a year longer than those who didn't. This was put down to the polyphenol antioxidant compounds in the chocolate.
Dr David Southgate writes in a review of Chocolate and Cocoa: Health and Nutrition in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition: "Clearly the antioxidant potential of cocoa is very high."
The fats in chocolate come from three sources: the cocoa bean, vegetable oils and milk. The fat in the cocoa is stearic acid, a saturated fat, and this makes up about 30 percent of the fat content of a bar. But while we usually think of saturated fats as unhealthy, the stearic acid from chocolate converts partly into oleic acid in the body, a monounsaturated fat of the kind found in olive oil, which is linked to health benefits.
There are mixed reports about the advantages of this fat profile. It does not raise the damaging LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels, which is good as far as heart disease is concerned, but it seems that the good HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol is suppressed, as are other compounds, which could suggest an increased risk of heart disease. Conversely, the antioxidant compounds in chocolate help to protect from heart disease. In people prone to migraines, amine compounds in chocolate can trigger attacks, as sufferers have low levels of an enzyme, phenol-suphotransferase, to process them. Yet because cocoa reduces blood platelet adhesion, which can lead to headaches, it may be beneficial for other people.
In research published in the EJCN, a cup of cocoa made with water was just as effective at limiting platelet stickiness as aspirin though the same effects cannot be expected of cocoa made with sugar and milk.
Chocolate: Cavity Fighter?
Some health benefits may be even more surprising. A report in New Scientist discussed a compound found in the cocoa bean husk that could help to cut tooth decay. The compound is found mainly in the husk, but some still finds its way into chocolate, and the cocoa butter that coats the teeth is thought to protect teeth by preventing plaque from forming.
When cocoa-bean husk was added to the drinking water of rats, they had half as many cavities when fed a sugary diet than those not given the compound. Dr David Beighton, of Guy's, King's & St Thomas' Dental Institute in London, says these compounds certainly had an effect, but that good oral hygiene is still the best way to healthy teeth.
The problem with chocolate is that we often do not know when to stop, and most of our intake is not always of the best quality. Most popular chocolate products have sugar as the main ingredient, and high fat levels.
The answer may be to eat high quality dark chocolate with a 60 to 70 percent cocoa solid content (normal dark chocolate has around 30 percent). As they are very rich, a little goes a long way. And high-cocoa chocolate can be suitable for diabetics as it does not create a blood sugar rush in the same way that high-sugar chocolate does. Chocolate has low levels of caffeine; its main stimulant is theobromine, which has a much milder effect. And the darker the chocolate, the higher the amounts.
There may also be a case for organic varieties, as the pesticide lindane, linked to breast cancer, has been found in chocolate. The chemical is in the process of being banned for use here but is still used in developing countries.
Craig Sams, of the chocolate producer Green & Black's, is a committed campaigner for organic food production. "The cocoa bean is a remarkable food as long as it is eaten in good-quality, high-cocoa mass chocolate." he says. But most chocolate consumed has as little as 10 to 20 percent cocoa mass, with a lot of sugar and hydrogenated vegetable fats. If it is not organic, it is usually heavily sprayed because cocoa is such a valuable crop.
Selected Prayer Studies
Bryd Study

Walker Study
Scott Walker, M.D., a research and treatment psychiatrist at the Center on Alcohol Substance Abuse and Addictions, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, modeled a study of alcoholics in treatment on the Byrd study. This two-group, double-blinded study was set up to evaluate whether patients receiving prayer by intercession would be more likely to succeed in their treatment programs. The results, which were made available in June 1996, showed no statistical difference between groups. Researchers are still analyzing details of the study to determine whether they overlooked something in design or analysis. Some suggest that in a study such as this, where the illness may be regarded in an unfavorable or negative light by those interceding, the effects of prayer may be minimal or nonexistent.
Thurman Sturdy
Ken Thurman, Ph.D., professor of special education and adjunct professor of pediatrics, at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is beginning a study that will examine the role of prayer on the recovery of premature babies. This study should add some new information to the growing body of scientific literature on prayer. In considering the work of previous researchers, Dr. Thurman, who is a special educator by training who has worked for the last 20 years on early intervention with children and families, has created a double-blinded study that will consider the amount of prayer received by and its effect on individual babies.
In this study, there will be three groups of babies born at 30 weeks gestation or less who have no genetic anomalies. Group I will be the "nonprayer" group; group II will have two groups praying for it; group III will have five groups praying for it All parent participants will be asked to fill out a questionnaire designed to determine what kind of social support the family has, their degree of dispositional optimism, and their level of religiosity. These factors will be considered when the final results are tabulated. In addition, parents will be asked to estimate how much prayer was done by them or other friends and family during their baby's hospitalization.
Stem Cell Discovery
Reverse Time

THE TIMES, Monday, January 15, 2001 By Nigel Hawkes, Health Editor
A researcher based in Britain claims to have achieved the biological equivalent of reversing time. She says that she has perfected a method of creating stem cells from adult cells, by passing the ethical dilemma of "therapeutic cloning" which recently divided the House of Commons. Although Parliament voted in favour of research into therapeutic cloning, many people remain uneasy about creating embryos solely for use as a source of spare parts.
If Ilham Abuljadayel's claims are verified, treatments for a wide variety of diseases such as leukaemia, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease may be transformed. Not only does her method produce a supply of healthy cells from the patient's own blood, but it generates far more cells, more quickly, than alternative methods, and without raising ethical dilemmas.
So unlikely does the claim seem to many biologists that she has found it impossible to have it published in leading journals. But now, she says, it has been replicated by one of the world's leading contract research companies, Covance, and a company has been set up to market the idea.
Stem cells are the forerunners of the mature cells that make up the organs of the body. They are "pluripotent", that is, they have within them the capacity to develop into many different types of cell - brain, muscle or blood, for example. The simplest source of a stem cell is a developing embryo, but until now it has been thought impossible to re-programme a fully developed adult cell and create a stem cell. That is what Dr Abuljadayel says that she can do.
Born in Saudi Arabia and educated at King's College London, she went back to her native country to work as an immunologist. She made her discovery by accident. She was trying to kill white blood cells by using a particular antibody when she forgot to add one ingredient to the mixture.
The result was not dead cells, but cells that had been transformed into stem cells. She calls the process retrodifferentiation: a reversal of the normal process by which immature stem cells differentiate to become mature adult cells.
Since the discovery she has worked to convince others that it is real. She has used a laboratory in the department of physiology in Cambridge and presented a seminar there before Christmas.
One leading scientist familiar with her work, Professor Adrian Newland of the Royal London Hospital Medical School, said that he had repeated her experiments with the same results.
"It's fascinating, but there could be other explanations for what is going on," he said. "My own work suggests that it isn't possible to reverse the process of differentiation, but I have repeated her work and got similar results. I think more research needs to be done to eliminate other possible explanations. As it stands, it could be amazing, or it could be inconsequential."
The first clinical application of the technique could be in treating leukaemia.
Dr Abuljadayel says that blood would be taken from the patient and treated to create a population of new stem cells, a process that takes only a few hours.
The patient would then be treated with drugs or radiation to destroy the bone marrow cells and kill the cancer, before repopulating the bone marrow with cells generated from the stem cells. Dr Abuljadayel's husband, Ghazi Dhout, who is president of Tristem, the Dublin-based company set up to exploit the discovery, says that a big advantage is that a huge volume of cells can be generated.
He says that the first trials, on individual patients, might start in the next six months. The company plans to seek partners among the big drug and biotech companies to develop the business. The invention is patented.
A cure for leukaemia may be possible with the discovery of an immune cell that can seek and destroy infected cells. The development was announced by researchers at London's Hammersmith Hospital and the Imperial College of Medicine, who have spent six years investigating the disease.
South America's Best Kept Secret: Yerba Mate
YERBA MATE - A Legendary "healing herb" and "Whole Body Tonic"
YERBA MATE - A LegendFor centuries, the Guarani Indians used the steeped juice of the leaves of the wild yerba tree-bush which proliferated beneath the rainforest canopy. They loved it for its cure-all health benefits which stimulate the body's immune system and reduce the effects of debilitating disease. Along with aiding digestion, it reduces stress and stimulates the mind. So effective were its attributes, they called it the "Drink of the Gods". The Jesuits who arrived in Paraguay centuries ago from Europe began drinking yerba mate after observing its amazing properties. So impressed, they began to cultivate yerba. Gauchos, the cowboys of South America, supplemented a mostly meat, cheese and bread diet with yerba mate because of its vitamin and mineral nutritional values. They carried it with them always, as they do today. As soon as people experienced it, there was no stopping the spread of this remarkable herbal drink throughout Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile.
As with so many ancient knowledges, health journals and professionals began in the early part of this century to verify what the indigenous peoples knew through a long history of use and observation.
"In 1964 one group of investigators from The Pasteur Institute and The Paris Scientific Society concluded that mate increases the supply of oxygen to the heart, especially during periods of stress or exercise....its whole body tonic property acts as a catalyst and enhances the healing powers of other herbs....in South American literature, mate is consistently noted for its ability to increase the body's immune system response and stimulate the body's natural resistance to diseases...it increases mental alertness and acuity without nervousness and jitters." He goes on to say that "reports of mate reducing blood pressure are not uncommon" and mate provides "more energy, vitality, better ability to concentrate, less nervousness, agitation, and anxiety."
Dr. Daniel Mowrey, Ph.D.

Yes, however the bombilla pulls the nutrients out more efficiently and you receive optimum nutrition benefits and a heightened sense of well being Mate contains a stimulant (mateine), a relative of caffeine that produces none of its jittery side effects. It also does not interfere with sleep cycles, nor is it addicting. It increases alertness and concentration, resistance to physical and mental fatigue, and confers a feeling of well-being without the depressant aftereffects typical of caffeine. Its promoters believe it to be a virtual wonder beverage-conferring euphoria while exacting no health penalties. Horacio Conesa, of the University of Buenos Aires Medical School, says, "There's not a single medical contraindication" for drinking maté. Daniel Mowrey, PhD, president of the American Physiotherapy Research Lab, has studied mate for 15 years and drinks it daily. He says it may provide the body with energy through nutrition rather than stimulant properties. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins, and fatty acids, and is a more potent antioxidant than vitamin C. It is also said to increase libido, improve male sexual performance, help in weight reduction, stop hair from turning gray, cleanse the blood of waste and toxins, reduce blood pressure, grow and repair heart tissue, boost immune response, reduce hay-fever and allergy symptoms, and relieve headaches and migraines.
Qualities of Yerba mate:

Yerba Mate is the subject of a German Monograph which lists its uses for mental and physical fatigue, and having "analeptic, diuretic, positively inotropic, positively chronotropic, glycogenolytic and lipolytic effects." (5) Yerba mate has been used medicinally as a diuretic, tonic, and a central nervous system stimulant.(6, 7) Another traditional use has been as a depurative (to promote cleansing and excretion of waste).(8) Herbalist, Daniel Mowrey, states that yerba mate is a "whole body tonic," even in large amounts" and "promotes balances in many body systems without overstimulating any system." Yerba mate's tonic effect on the body helps to regulate sleep cycles and reduce fatigue.(9)Mate is used to reduce appetite, invigorate the body, and affects the muscles by reducing fatigue.(10) In Europe, Mate is used for weight loss, "as the ideal slimming remedy which facilitates losing weight in a natural way and still the distressing feelings of hunger and thirst."(5) Dr. James Balch, MD recommends Yerba Mate for arthritis, headache, hemorrhoids, fluid retention, obesity, fatigue, stress, constipation, allergies and hay fevers stating that it "cleanses the blood, tones the nervous system, retards aging, stimulates the mind, controls the appetite, stimulates the production of cortisone, and is believed to enhance the healing powers of other herbs."(11) Research on the active constituents of Yerba Mate were reported in the mid-1970s through mid-1980's (12, 13) The primary active chemical constituency of yerba mate is made up of 0.3-2.0% caffeine(2, 5) theobromine, theophylline, saponins, and 10% chlorogenic acid.(5, 7) Sterols resembling ergosterol and cholesterol are also present in yerba mate.(5) In addition, Yerba Mate is a rich source of minerals and 15 amino acids are present in the leaves.(14) In a study by Swantson-Flatt with the closely related Ilex species guayusa, the mate extract "retarded the development of hyperglycaemia" in streptozotocin diabetic mice and "reduced the hyperphagia, polydipsia, body weight loss, and glycated haemoglobin."(15) This study suggests the presence of potentially useful antidiabetic agents in Mate. The antioxidant properties demonstrated clinically by Yerba Mate were reported in two clinical studies demonstrating its high antioxidant values linked to rapid absorption of known antioxidant phytochemicals found in Mate leaves.(16,17) Of most recent clinical interest is a group of known and novel saponins that researchers have isolated in Mate leaves. Saponins are a group of phytochemicals with known pharmacological activities, including, as the latest research shows, stimulating the immune system.
REFERENCED QUOTES ON YERBA MATE "ACTIONS:
Mental stimulant, Increases stamina and endurance, Diuretic. TRADITIONAL USE: Yerba Mate is considered a stimulant and effective as a diuretic. Yerba Mate carries a colorful tradition on the South American Pampas. Gauchos drink Yerba Mate from a cow horn. It is a general tonic and invigorating to the physique, as well as mentally stimulating. Yerba Mate is now widely used for its tonic effects. Yerba Mate is an invigorating tonic to the body and mind. MERIDIAN INDICATIONS: Increases circulation by invigorating Spleen / Kidney Qi, Heat to Triple Warmer, Opens Liver meridian, Clears mist from Upper Burner, Fortifies Heart and Lung heat. EVA POINTS: Kidney, Circulation"
"Medicinal Action and Uses: Tonic, diuretic, and powerfully stimulant."
"For arthritis, headache, hemorrhoids, fluid retention, obesity, fatigue, stress, constipation, allergies, and hay fever. Cleanses the blood, tones the nervous system, retards ageing, stimulates the mind, controls the appetite, stimulates production of cortisone, and is believed to enhance the healing power of other herbs."
"For reasons unknown at this time, echinacea in high doses tends to promote continued immune system stimulation rather than balanced immune function. This is not true of most [herbal] tonics. Most behave like yerba mate', a more of less whole body tonic; yerba mate', even in large amounts, continues to promote balance in many body systems without overstimulating any system."...
"Of the many immunomodulators in the plant kingdom, I think the best are lapacho, echinacea, astragalus, yerba mate', licorice root and all species of ginseng."
"Smilax together with ginseng and yerba mate' would act to enhance the physical development of muscle tissue. These would help oxygenate cells and help them burn calories. The entire musculoskeletal system would benefit."...
"Last but certainly not least, I believe a modern elixir should address energy production. The solution in a liquid extract is to combine the only really good herbs for this effect, yerba mate' and ginseng species. First, it contains significant amounts of the South American herb yerba mate'.This would give the product a natural energy wallop not shared by other liquid herbal extracts. This natural energy would not interfere with the ability to sleep. On the contrary, it would help regulate sleep cycles and produce a better sleep. It would also allow one to work longer without fatigue, get more done, and feel better about doing it. Indirectly, then, the nervous system benefits, as stress and anxiety are reduced, muscle tension lessens and performance effectiveness increases."
